Rafael Nadal withdraws from Laver Cup due to ‘personal reasons’
Rafael Nadal withdrew from the 2012 Laver Cup after having to postpone his performance in the event because of a ‘personal reason’. Nadal, who lost to Marin Cilic in the first round 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-4, withdrew from the Laver Cup after losing to Cilic in the first round of the prestigious event having to take a day off due to an earlier loss.
Nadal, who had already lost his first round match to David Ferrer, had to withdraw with an injury on Monday. Nadal is now scheduled to play Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem, Denis Istomin, Gilles Simon and Borna Coric.
Laver Cup, which has become an annual competition, was originally a single-elimination tournament in 1970 and is known for its fierce rivalry between the men’s and women’s events and is considered a precursor to WTA Tour finals. Nadal, along with other top tennis players, is often included on a list of greatest players of all time, where he is ranked second overall.

The tournament had received criticism this year after Federer was left with a 1-0 lead in the first set, only to have him come back to beat the Spaniard in three sets.
After news of Nadal’s withdrawal was announced, Federer said: “I think I played well in the first set, but maybe I was playing a bit too relaxed and I tried too much to do things and it was a bit too much for me. I’m not the best player in the world and even if I wasn’t a great player, I still played some good matches.
“I had trouble today. I think in that match today it was because of fatigue, but also because it was the first match after Wimbledon and after we did not win, so the first match after the defeat. I have to be ready for big matches. I think I played well in the first set today.”
