Jackie Calmes: Ron DeSantis proves that cruetly is a Republican trait
I want to begin this post by thanking the two Republican candidates running for governor of Florida. They are running in tough election years. That’s what I think, anyway.
I think the primary is going to help Democrats win the state. However, they need to hold their own. Democrats need to play defense well, and need to make their case to voters that they can be the governor of Florida.
This is where the Republican candidates come in. We need to make them a reality in the race for governor, because with Democrats having won the state for two years in a row, Republicans seem to be in denial that we can win.
We’re looking for three things from these candidates, and we need to see how they measure up to those three items.
I’ll begin by saying that no Republican should be saying “my opponent is the worst person to run for governor in Florida since George Wallace.” It’s not fair to ask someone to be as bad as a candidate who ran against the person they’re trying to support.
I’ll say this, though, that Republicans seem to think that the election of the sitting governor should be a referendum on the person’s person. This is not the case. It’s a referendum on the governor and the job he’ll be doing.
Let’s examine these three items:
1. I think the Democrat, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, does have great experience and he’s a good man. But, he’s not running against the worst person to run for governor or the worst candidate for governor.
When you say “Republican,” it’s more accurate to say “politically,” because Republicans only have to worry about the race for governor, because the governor’s mansion is, at this point, more of a symbolic position than anything else.
There are many candidates who would actually be better for the state than the governor because they’d actually be good at the job. In fact, I think many would be better for the state because they’d be better for the state.
The governor can’t do anything with the state, and can’t make anything better.
